WELCOME
Hello and welcome to our campaign website.

As a longtime resident, I appreciate the strong neighborhoods, safe communities and vibrant business environment that make this one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. I also know that as our population grows, it is more important than ever to elect leaders who will bring people together to address challenges and protect our quality of life.

That has been my top priority as Kane County Board Chairman and I am proud of our accomplishments. From holding the line on property taxes to making government more efficient while strengthening services, we have made tremendous progress in a short period of time – but there is more work to do.

This site highlights some of our achievements, presents a vision for the future and talks about the many ways that you can get involved in this campaign. Please check back often and do not hesitate to offer your feedback. Working together, we are making a difference for Kane County – and I look forward to building on that record in years to come!

Sincerely,

Karen McConnaughay

WHAT'S NEW
Aurora Mayor Endorses McConnaughay

Aurora support: Mayor praises county cooperation

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner Tuesday announced his endorsement of incumbent Karen McConnaughay for Kane County Board chairman. Weisner is not only mayor of the county's largest city, he is one of its prominent Democrats. He said he endorsed McConnaughay, a Republican from St. Charles, because she has worked to make the county and its municipalities "close partners when it comes to serving our residents."

"That spirit of cooperation is no accident," Weisner said in a release. "It is a direct result of strong leadership on the part of the Kane County Board chairman ..."

In addition to Weisner's endorsement, the press release Tuesday carried the names of mayors of 12 of the county's 29 other municipalities who have endorsed McConnaughay...

Tribune Endorses McConnaughay

The fast-growing county has a strong leader and rising star in Karen McConnaughay. Her style can ruffle a few feathers. But she has driven some significant decisions in the past few years, including the completion of a new county jail. She has pushed for road improvements and preservation of open space. She has upgraded the county's financial system to provide greater accountability. The Republican is strongly endorsed over Democrat Sandy Kaczmarski...

Daily Herald's Pick for Kane Chairman

Incumbent Karen McConnaughay, a Republican from St. Charles, gets our nod to lead the county for another four years. She has overseen the construction of a new jail and animal control facility, both of which were done with an eye toward getting the best bang for the taxpayers' buck. She's moved a pair of critical Fox River bridge projects forward and kept an eye on the looming problem of Kane County's water supply. Democratic opponent Sandy Kaczmarski...

The Beacon

McConnaughay has transformed Kane County government... If the state of Illinois were run half as well as Kane County, we would not see the gridlock and frustration we have had to put up with in Springfield.

IN FOCUS
THE COUNTY BUDGET

The History

Under Karen McConnaughay’s leadership, Kane County has strengthened services, balanced its budgets and maintained a property tax rate that is less than 5-cents of every dollar paid by Kane County residents.

The Issue

From soaring gasoline prices to a record rate of home foreclosure, Kane County residents are finding it increasingly difficult to balance their household budgets – forcing many to sacrifice to make ends meet. Given that economic reality and declining government revenues, Karen McConnaughay believes county government has a responsibility to make the same tough choices and find ways to become more efficient without jeopardizing services.

This is typical with McConnaughay, she is leading by example.

The Leadership

The Board Chairman has proposed a three-faceted approach to reducing government spending that includes rejecting a planned salary increase if she is re-elected to another term.  Specifically, McConnaughay has called for:

  • All county departments and offices to identify 1.5 percent savings in their annual budget
  • A countywide hiring freeze
  • Elected leaders and senior staff to follow the Chairman’s lead and reject planned salary increases

The Quote

“I strongly believe we have a responsibility to do what businesses and residents across our county are doing: we have to find ways to become more efficient, we have to trim our budgets without sacrificing services.”
